The party had won just three seats in the 2019 elections. On Wednesday, Naidu committed his party to supporting the BJP in its quest for a third term. The TDP was formed in 1982 by Telugu film actor NT Ramarao and is a major political player in the southeastern state of Andhra Pradesh. It is led by N Chandrababu Naidu, who is the son-in-law of Ramarao. After the 1996 Lok Sabha election, the party was part of an alliance of regional parties called the United Front, which received external backing from the Congress. Then, in 1999, it joined hands with the BJP. They contested elections together, and the TDP was a part of the NDA under Prime Minister Vajpayee. But in 2002, after the Gujarat riots, Naidu called for Modi’s resignation. The BJP, his alliance partner, rejected the demand. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said he will form the next government for the third term, but he would need the support of allies after his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fell short of the majority mark for the first time since 2014. The BJP secured 240 seats in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s parliament, in a major electoral setback as the poll survey had projected the Hindu nationalist party to win by a bigger majority. Parties from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the BJP have won 43 seats. Taken together, the NDA has a strength of 283 – 11 seats more than the 272 mark needed to form the government. Yashraj Sharma Yashraj Sharma Reporting from New Delhi, India One central question seems to hover over the ongoing political discussions over the formation of the next government: Can Modi rule a government dependent on other parties, something he has never done before? “This is an unknown,” said Neelanjan Sircar, a political scientist at the Center for Policy Research in New Delhi. “Modi has only been known to work as a leader with absolutely centralised power,” Sircar told Al Jazeera. “The ‘Modi phenomenon’ is based on a particular form of governance. Him having to compromise with allies is not either a Modi we know, or a Modi he has sold.” Read more here. Now that Modi has been elected leader of the BJP-led alliance, here’s how things may pan out: Modi, confident of the support of the allies he needs for his third term, will stake a claim to form the government. The BJP may soon seek an appointment with the Indian president to inform her of the alliance’s majority in parliament. The president may invite the NDA to form the government and decide a date for the swearing-in. However, we must remember that the opposition has still not conceded defeat, and its coalition partners are also meeting in New Delhi to explore ways they can stake their claim to form the next government. The opposition has already reportedly reached out to Modi’s two main allies, the Telugu Desam Party and the Janata Dal (United), who are both known for their ideological flexibility and could go either way. The party did end up dominating Gujarat as expected, but with far fewer votes – and while suffering a loss not seen in the past 10 years. Since Modi became prime minister, the party had been winning all the seats in his home state. But the Congress managed to win one of its 26 constituencies. The politician who did it was Geniben Nagaji Thakor, who defeated her BJP rival in Banaskantha by more than 30,000 votes. Thakor hailed the victory as “historic” in a message after the results.
